This season, on the eve of its 125th anniversary, J. Press celebrates its roots in the British Isles. Jacobi Press founded his namesake label at Yale in 1902; and the look he pioneered, “Ivy style,” has become synonymous with America, and with New England. But much of it has its origins in old England and the British Isles. We’re proud that many of our offerings are still made there, from our famous Shaggy Dog sweaters, which are made in Shetland, in the middle of the North Sea; to English neckwear and outerwear; to traditional Aran fisherman sweaters made in the windswept isles off the west coast of Ireland. From Scottish cashmeres and Harris Tweeds to Cheviots and English flannels, J. Press’ relationship with some of the most important British mills goes back over a century.
The collection also includes new pieces made in collaboration with traditional English makers and longtime J. Press partners Barbour, Gloverall, Lavenham; a Made-in-Japan capsule; and more.
This season also marks the first J. Press women’s capsule in the American market since the 1960s, with women’s O.C.B.D.s, Shaggy Dog and Fair Isle sweaters, blazers, tweeds, and outerwear, and more including women’s collaborations with Alex Mill and Steven Stolman. While we have not offered a women’s capsule in a long time, women have shopped at J. Press for a long time. Fran Lebowitz has stated that she owns no fewer than four thousand (yes, four thousand!) J. Press Shaggy Dog sweaters, and J. Press made Oxford cloth shirts for Marilyn Monroe when she was married to Arthur Miller.
The collection will be released in multiple deliveries over the course of the season.
